Get Ready to Double Up on Your Education! Co-Terminal Double Degree Programmes and Personal Finance Programme
To support Hong Kong’s development in eight key areas* outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan of the Central Government and to meet the evolving market demand for talent having interdisciplinary training, all full-time Bachelor of Education programmes at EdUHK will be integrated with another discipline to create new co-terminal double degree programmes starting in the 2025/26 academic year. Under this “Education Futures, Diverse Talents” initiative, FLASS will introduce seven new co-terminal double degree programmes in the upcoming academic year. These programmes will allow students to specialise in multiple fields, thereby enhancing their career prospects. Additionally, a new personal finance programme will be introduced to address the growing market demand for expertise in personal and family finance, as well as wealth management.
The seven new co-terminal bachelor’s degree programmes are designed by merging a Bachelor of Education curriculum with one of the existing bachelor’s degree programmes offered by FLASS. These programmes will provide students with knowledge not only in teacher education but also in subject areas including personal finance, artificial intelligence and educational technology, environmental management, sports science and coaching, and sociology and community studies. Upon completion, students will receive a bachelor’s degree in education along with another bachelor’s degree in their respective subject area within the double degree programmes; however, they will receive a single honours classification. Graduates will hold teacher qualifications in Hong Kong and will be eligible to apply for Registered Teacher status.
“As a forward-looking institution, FLASS and the University continuously review our programme designs to meet the evolving needs of society. Our double degree programmes equip students with knowledge both in education and another distinct academic field. The widened breadth of knowledge and professional training can significantly expand our graduates’ career choices beyond becoming primary or secondary school teachers. With expertise and qualifications across multiple domains, our graduates can offer diverse skill sets to employers,” stated Dr Chan Man-ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies and Student Learning) of FLASS.
Meanwhile, the faculty will introduce a new Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Personal Finance programme. The national and Hong Kong governments have expressed a clear objective to maintain the city’s status as an international financial centre, reinforcing its position as a leading global asset and wealth management hub while developing it into a centre for family offices. The new bachelor’s degree programme in personal finance aims to expand the local talent pool in personal finance and wealth management to meet increasing market needs.
“We anticipate a growing market demand for talent in personal finance and private wealth management due to Hong Kong’s financial positioning. To address this demand and enhance graduates’ employability, the curriculum will incorporate the latest developments from the global financial services sector, including fintech, risk management, wealth management, investment analysis, and green and sustainable finance,” remarked Dr Tan Weiqiang, Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies and Programme Leader for the new initiative. He added that this personal finance programme had been developed based on substantial experience gained from running the Master of Arts in Personal Finance Education over the past three years ago.
Many existing financial courses and programmes in Hong Kong primarily focus on corporate needs. FLASS’ new personal finance programme is first of its kind in Hong Kong as it is specifically designed to train professionals in individual and family finance. It aims to cultivate talents with comprehensive knowledge and skills in financial planning and wealth management while emphasising education related to individual and family financial needs. Graduates can expect broad career prospects, including roles as financial planners, asset and investment advisors, credit analysts, financial advisors, and finance education trainers.
